VirtuaLab Guides

VirtuaLab is the result of a collaboration between Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Sede Medellín, University of Cambridge and CMCL Innovations with the Royal Academy of Engineering as sponsor. The objective of this project was to teach engineering with real-life problems. As results of this project, six Labs guides were made for the CRE course. The objective of this project was to teach engineering with real-life problems. The main result is the six VIRTUAL laboratory guides that this website presents.

Necesita tener JavaScript habilitado para poder verlo. To do the Labs you need to install the kinetics™ & SRM Engine and MoDS software in your computer. Please contact CMCL Innovations for a trial license. We also recommend that you complete tutorials 1 and 2 of kinetics™ & SRM Engine before undertaking Lab 1.

Lab. 1 and Lab. 2 can also be solved with MATLAB software or any similar computational toolbox.

Labs guides

• Lab 1. Ethylene production through the thermal cracking of ethane (coke effect).

  Objetive: To identify the impact of coke deposition during the thermal cracking of ethane on plug-flow reactor and to develop strategies to counter it.

  Objetive: Identify the effect of operating conditions on selectivity, yield and economic balance.

  Objetive: To determine the effect that EGR has on NOx emissions and vehicle performance and understand how a “defeat device” works

• Lab 4. Nano-sized ZnO particles Virtual Lab - Learning chemical reactor engineering through real problems.

  Objetive: (i) to model a synthesis process of the ZnO nanoparticles using a network of batch reactors and (ii) to investigate how the final particles characterisitcs can be controlled by modifying selected process parameters.
