Presentation

Welcome to Intelligent Electronic Devices for Power System’s course. During the next weeks, we will work on activities that let you acquire the theoretical concepts and get new knowledge for the development of IED for power systems.

This course will go through different subjects related to the main hardware parts of IED, the most relevant techniques for signal processing used for protection and monitoring, and the most relevant communication protocols used by these devices. We will analyze and identify functionality and limitations of state of the art of digital devices.

At the end of the course, you will be able to design a simple computer-based IED applying some of the concepts acquired during the class.

Prerequisites

English proficiency: All the written material will be in English and the final report.

To take this course, you may have the following knowledge.

You may have an english proficiency at least of B1.

Systems Concepts:

  1. Circuit Analysis.
  2. Electric Variables.
  3. Characteristic of a Power Systems.
  4. Power System SubStation Concepts.
  5. Power Flow.

Basic Electronic concepts: Since it is required some implementation of algorithms, the student must be familiar with a programming language such as MATLAB and Pyton (Recommended but not mandatory) More advanced functions will require low-level programming such as C++ and C#.

Skill: The students will improve several technical skills related to algorithms, numerical computation, and transverse skills related to reading and writing scientific reports, and collaborative work.

Learning Outcomes

Having completed this course successfully, the student will be able to:

  • Identify power system elements on the new trends of technology.
  • Determine the functionality and limitations of state of the art of digital devices for monitoring, protection and control applications.
  • Analyze specific components of computer-based protection devices.
  • Describe the limitation and operation of time-synchronized devices.
  • Determine the effect, limitation, and security of communication channels.
  • Implement state of the art algorithms by computer software.
  • Recognize the characteristics of IED testing.

Methodology

Interaction: The interaction of this course will be through the following means.

Weekly synchronous session: Every week, we will have between one or two online sessions to present, explain, and discuss the main topics of the course. The schedule will be agreed with the students at the beginning of the course.

General Forum: Here are asked general thematics about the course for the participation of all members.

E-mail: is intended to have specific questions with the professor. It is intended to be answered not later than two working days after received.

Activities forums: Are places to discuss particular topics of the course where it is encouraged to have collaborative learning


Grading

The evaluation of the course will be performed during the whole class through different activities that are mandatory but not necessary are graded. Some of the activities include participation in the forum, code programming assignments, online presentations.

  • Discussions, Oral Presentations, implementation of algorithms, among others (40%)
  • Final Project (60%) Development of IED, Application of using IED or any other related with your postgraduate project or thesis.
